Peace Within You

Celebrating the change of season is marked by indigenous people all over the world.  Observing the Earth going into hibernation on walks or from the window is a great practice in mindfulness and presence. Perhaps we are consumed with all of the material and media noise rather than being intentional  and aware of what the change of season means to us.  A perfect time to reflect on your personal values and be sure you are welcoming the season in alignment with those.  See my post on ‘Assessing your Personal Values’ for fun quizzes you can take alone or with your partner.

Simplifying can look like leaving some holiday decorations in the closet. Only watching a few of your favorite holiday movies. One night on the town. One holiday party or none. One tree lit outside. A few quality hours at a family celebration instead of the whole night. Quiet observation. Restful.

I have many clients that feel absolutely tied and bound to ‘having’ to do certain things during the holidays. Things that they actually don’t want to do. Things that don’t make them feel gratitude or rejuvenated. They aren’t even sure why they feel compelled to do them.  Sometimes it is connected to the fear of ‘disappointing’ someone.  Do you value sacrificing your peace and wellbeing for others?

Sometimes it is connected to not wanting to feel responsible for someone else’s hurt feelings. “This isn’t what I want to do but it’s easier than feeling guilty for hurting mom’s feelings.”  Adult children often feel responsible for their parent’s feelings.  Where does that stem from?  Usually an emotionally immature parent who can’t communicate their feelings and put their child’s desires ahead of their own.

Sometimes it is connected to wanting to feel the holiday vibes and dopamine seeking.  In order to feel those good vibes, you need breaks from the holiday events and activities.  More is not more.  More is draining.

Schedule time during the Holiday season to rejuvenate yourself with some spa time (home or out), an audio book, a yoga session, and plenty of walks.

I thought I would have more to share on this topic but I myself am also taking some time off to be with myself and my family. I wish you peace within and peace around you and hope this inspires you to do one thing differently this year that benefits you.
